You will also gain a good understanding of the kinds of industrial applications they are suitable for. Let's start with the basics of what an S7-1200 PLC is. It's a type of programmable logic controller manufactured by Siemens, used to control and automate industrial processes. The S7-1200 PLC has two main components: the hardware and the software. The hardware includes the power supply, central processing unit (CPU), input/output modules, and communication modules. The software used to program the PLC to perform specific functions based on input signals from sensors and switches is called TIA Portal, which is also developed by Siemens. - The 1211C is a starter model for the S7-1200 PLCs. It has less memory and fewer ways to communicate, but it still works well for small and medium automation projects. If you want to create an HVAC system, the 1211C could be a good choice for you. - The next type of S7-1200 PLC that I will talk about is called the 1212C. It's a great choice for slightly bigger automation applications, like controlling the temperature of a medium-sized industrial furnace. The 1212C also supports PID control functions. - The 1214C is a popular choice for applications that need more advanced automation, like moving materials around, running pumps, or managing small processes. With the 1214C, you can also create PID control functions with more advanced features. - CPU 1215C is a good option for large automation tasks. By large automation tasks, I mean tasks that usually need high-speed processing and advanced communication capabilities such as complex process control systems, motion control systems, and large material handling systems. - The 1217C is similar to the 1215C but it has more inputs and outputs. It's also faster, which is important for applications that need to gather data quickly. One example of an application that needs a faster PLC is high-speed data acquisition. - The 1212FC, 1214FC, and 1215FC fail-safe models are designed not only to control machines and equipment but also to keep people safe. In places like oil rigs or factories where dangerous things can happen, it's important to have an extra layer of protection to prevent accidents. The letter "C" at the end of the S7-1200 PLC models indicates that the PLC has a compact design. Even though they're small, they have built-in inputs and outputs. But, you can always add more input/output modules to them if you need to. In terms of communication ports, all of the S7-1200 PLCs come with PROFINET ports that help them communicate with other machines. But sometimes, you may need to use a different type of port like Profibus-DP, I/O Link, or AS-i to make them work with other machines. For both systems, a wide range of modules can be used according to the task at hand and a cost-effective stock of spare parts are readily available. Released in 2012, the SIMATIC S7-1500 is the successor of the longstanding S7-300 PLC. Although they are interchangeable in many situations, the S7-1500 generation integrates the latest and future-proof technologies into an automation system with enhanced system features over the S7-300. With the engineering system TIA Portal, the common engineering platform for all SIMATIC controllers, the SIMATIC S7-1500 is designed for fast market changes, constantly shorter product life cycles, and increasing cost pressures. Both the S7-300 and S7-1500 PLCs are similar in shape and size and are built around a modular, expandable design. CPUs, I/O modules and communication modules may be added as needed to a standard backplane that can be sized to fit your specific project. Up to 32 expansion modules can be installed with both systems, requiring only a DIN rail mount and backplane. The S7-1500 has a standard built-in display and keypad that allows for basic configuration and diagnostics without the need for an external screen. Both the S7-300 and S7-1500 series PLCs have many different configuration options that allow the optimal CPU to be selected depending on the application. Both platforms provide several CPU categories including: - Standard (for typical applications) - Compact (for applications where space and cost is a concern) - Fail-Safe (for fail-safe applications) The S7-1500 significantly increases performance over the S7-300 with a faster backplane bus, standard PROFINET interface, and shorter reaction times. As a result, the updated PROFINET interface provides greater reproducibility and precision in the microsecond timeframe. When programming for slower processes this may not make a noticeable difference in the real world, however, it can be very useful in high-speed applications such as assembly lines. Two Profinet ports come standard on every S7-1500 CPU although you may select additional ports and communication protocols when ordering. As an added bonus, you are able to configure these ports as a bridge which acts as a mini switch. This can be very convenient when linking devices and interfacing with the PLC in the field. With S7-300s, the desired number of ports and appropriate communication protocol must be chosen up-front. Prices between the S7-300 and S7-1500 are very similar between like models. If cost is a major concern, the S7-1500 compact version provides up to 70% cost savings, as well as 25% space savings compared to the standard CPUs, although some features are limited. There are several main factors to consider when selecting a PLC for your project. These factors are: - Application size, - Available space, - Communications protocols, - Processing performance. By using the Siemens website, you can select the appropriate PLC for your specific application. Here is the link to the PLC selection tool of Siemens: 🤍 In conclusion, both the S7-300 and S7-1500 PLCs are capable and proven systems, providing modular, cost-effective, and application-specific solutions to fit your needs. In the future, Siemens will slowly begin to phase out the S7-300 in favor of the S7-1500. Eventually, the S7-300s will no longer be supported, although that is still many years away. In Part 1, you learned how to configure the PLC hardware in TIA Portal V15.1. 👉 🤍 In Part 2, you learned how to write a Ladder Logic PLC program for a simple Water Pumping System and how to control the level of the water tank in that process. 👉 🤍 In Part 3, you learned how to simulate our PLC program using the PLC simulator or PLCSIM. 👉 🤍 In Part 4 (this part) of the PLC programming course, we'll continue with another simple PLC programming example and you'll learn how to write a ladder logic PLC program to start and stop an electric motor using Siemens TIA portal. Remember that you don't need any actual hardware to participate in this course. So having a laptop with a TIA Portal installed on that would be enough! In most of the examples, you can use Step 7 and WinCC instead of TIA Portal. Same as always, first, we have to calculate the number of inputs and outputs of the process to and from the PLC cards. We have two pushbuttons, one for starting and the other for stopping the electric motor. Each of these pushbuttons has an indicator lamp inside to signal the condition of the motor to the operator. Therefore, we have two inputs to our digital input card from the pushbuttons and another input from the contactor’s auxiliary contact. We use the input from the auxiliary contact of the contactor in our PLC program as feedback for the electric motor status. Is it ON or OFF? By the way, we have three outputs as well. One is for turning ON and OFF the electric motor and the other two are for turning ON and OFF the indicator lamps of the pushbuttons. Sometimes where it’s possible, we should use a proximity sensor on the shaft of the motor to make sure if the motor is really running and it’s not stocked by any means. In this way, as long as the proximity sensor’s input to the PLC card is getting ON/OFF with a certain frequency, we are sure that the motor is working. Another point that you'll learn in this video is that: one of the important automation documents or drawings that is used frequently during commissioning and troubleshooting of processes is the “Control Panel Wiring Diagram” in which we can find the power and control sections of the process. But the electrical schematic that you see in this video actually does not really count as a wiring diagram, but it’s a simple schematic drawing for a better understanding of the concepts. Siemens is known for three primary PLC types as of today: LOGO, S7-1200 series, and the S7-1500 series. If your background lies in Allen Bradley, you may think of these brands as equivalent to what AB offers in terms of Micro800 PLCs, CompactLogix PLCs, and ControlLogix. In other words, the least expensive LOGO lineup of PLCs is suitable for small stand-alone applications and comes at a much lower price point than the other two. On the other hand, the S7-1500 PLC is powerful, feature-packed, and can be deployed as a distributed control system (DCS) for entire regions of a plant/process. To program the "set" command, I first place a "normally open" contact. Then from "bit logic", I put the command "set" on the right side. I address the "normally open" contact "I-0-dot-1" and the "Reset" output "Q0.0". I save, download and monitor. I simulate. As you can see, if I turn on the first "normally open" contact (even for a short moment), the output turns on permanently. And only by turning on the second "normally open" contact, the output is turned off. If I turn on both contacts at the same time, the output turns off. Because if there are two conflicting commands, the priority is the last command. And in this program, the last command is "Reset" (or off). Look at the STL language of this program. ✅ C'mon over to 🤍 where you can learn PLC programming faster and easier than you ever thought possible! PLC Programming Tutorial for Beginners_ Part-2 🤍 In this lesson we will learn how to write a PLC program using an "S7 300” PLC and “STEP 7” software. We have two pumps which are being used to transfer two separate liquids into this tank.Inside the tank there are two level switches installed in the lower and upper parts of the tank respectively. There is also an electrically powered mixer inside the tank which starts working for a defined period of time, mixing the two liquids together after the tank has filled. We also have a discharge valve in the bottom of the tank which controls the draining of the liquid from the tank. When the level of the liquid drops to the level of the switch's position the contact closes, sending a 24 volt DC signal to the PLC input. We want to write the program so that when the level of the liquid reaches this minimum, the pumps will be activated and begin filling the tank with the liquids. The pumps continue filling the tank until the level reaches its maximum at the higher level switch. When this happens the open contacts in the switch will be closed and another 24-volt signal will be sent to the PLC input telling us that the tank is full. When this signal has been sent, first the pumps should shut down so that no more liquid enters the tank, and then this mixer should be turned on. We want the mixer to operate for seven seconds, mixing the liquids that have been pumped into the tank. After seven seconds the mixer should automatically shut down and this discharge valve should open. With the valve open the liquid will be discharged from the tank and transferred to another location within the factory to be processed. When the level of the liquid in the tank drops to the minimum set level of the lower switch, the switch contacts will close again thus starting a repeat of the cycle!
