After about a week of protests, the Kudmi community, which is demanding Scheduled Tribe (ST) status and the inclusion of their language in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution, lifted their agitation following assurances from the West Bengal government. Kudmis are mainly a peasant community, with their population concentrated in the Junglemahal areas or the Chota Nagpur plateau of West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha. After 1950, when the Scheduled Tribe list was prepared in independent India, Kudmis did not find a place on it. Ever since, they have been fighting for their identity as a Scheduled Tribe. The Kudmis argue that in the British era, various documents listed them as a tribe and an aboriginal community of India, and they want that identity restored. कुड़मी समाज के विभिन्न संगठनों ने एक बार फिर 20 सितंबर से रेल टेका, डहर छेंका (रेल रोको-रास्ता रोको) आंदोलन का ऐलान किया था, जो कि कुर्मी संगठनों ने बुधवार से प्रस्तावित अनिश्चितकालीन रेल रोको आंदोलन वापस ले लिया है. इसके साथ ही पश्चिम बंगाल, झारखंड और ओडिशा के कुछ हिस्सों में दक्षिण पूर्व रेलवे और पूर्वी तट रेलवे के क्षेत्राधिकार के तहत ट्रेन अपने निर्धारित मार्गों पर सामान्य रूप से चलेंगी. इसकी जानकारी अधिकारियों ने दी है. हालांकि, झारखंड के अग्रणी कुर्मी संगठन टोटेमिक कुर्मी विकास मोर्चा के अध्यक्ष शीतल ओहदार ने दावा किया कि वे लोग बुधवार को आंदोलन जारी रखेंगे. Then they were omitted from the list of communities listed as tribes in the 1931 census.[3] Again, they were omitted from the Scheduled Tribe list drawn up in 1950. In 2004, the Government of Jharkhand recommended that they should be listed as a Scheduled Tribe rather than Other Backward Class.[4] The Tribal Research Institute of Government of India recommended against this proposal, claiming they are a sub-caste of the Kunbi and thus different to tribal people.[5][6] Therefore, In 2015, the Government of India refused to approve the recommendation of Jharkhand government to list the Kurmi Mahato as Schedule Tribe. They are included in the list of Other Backward Class in the States of Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.[7][6]
